And a sunny banana to you too...

There are days, and then there are days. And then there are "sunny banana days". For the uneducated, "sunnybanana is what a South African says to his/her friends, colleagues or strangers as a greeting in the mornings.

A few other classics in our family...

Beavertree. Defn. The tree in which families of "beavers" nest.

"Milking the bull". Defn. Something you should not do. Note, cows have horns too, as we found out on a farm visit recently. Comment by Adam: you'd have to be VERY brave to milk a bull!

Strawbellies. Defn. The fruit most quickly scoffed by small people leading to red stained chins and tummies. Hence, bellies.

Catastrophes. Defn. Noun. The two furry felines that put their @'s onto Kerry's clean linen with a look of triumph and satisfaction.

Ruskies. Defn. Not the Russians, but rather the dried biscuit/rusks that Luke scoffs by the handful approximately 7 minutes after he has woken up. Routine: wake up, climb into bed and cuddle with mom, move to kitchen and make sure Dad makes tea and ruskies immediately for said small boy. Pleeeeeaaase daddy!

Crumblies. Defn. What is left in the ruskie tray when the ruskies have dried out. Sole property of the small boy, on pain of tantrum or tears at the prospect of sharing.

Count-down callerpittar. Defn. That wiggly worm thing that you put up only to remove segments of its body daily. The segments also occasionally pittar to the floor during the night, leading to consternation in the morning. "No mommy, it's 3 days to Christmas!" (even though yesterday there were seven days to go).

Voetsak. Defn. Rude! A word that we are not allowed to say but which gets whispered in corners with a naughty grin and lots of laughter. Listening to old SA songs can have unexpected vocab influences... Sing with me "Popcorn, chewing gum, peanuts and bubblegum..."
