Antenatal classes begin

Well, all going ok on this side despite 4am mosquito bombing raids around our bed each morning. Thankfully it was cool last night and the mozzies stayed home: they should have enough blood to keep the little vampires happy for several days now. They tend to ignore Adam and circle round my head. I’ve bought “Mike the Moz”, a kiddies mosquito repellent, but it seems to wear off by the time the raids start.

We went to our first antenatal class on Tuesday night. It was quite good, despite a birthing video that was made when I was still at school and had the creepy music to go with it. Adam and I chuckled afterwards.

The couples attending are from very varied backgrounds as you could tell by the range of cars outside. From plumbers to environmentalists to accountants. A nice bunch and rather down-to-earth: the one couple told us that they call their baby Forest Bump! They’re all due in May and June, so we are the laat lammetjies (picture lots of bulging tums and my rather little bump, all perched expectantly on the edge of their chairs). Quite surprisingly, the moms were rather restricted at tea time as I was expecting them to dive into the fresh Swiss Roll cake on offer at half-time. :)

The midwife running the course dived straight in to talk about perineums and checkups etc. Nothing quite like a gentle start – some of the husbands were rather startled! But it's rather nice to have a forum to ask ANY question that you want, and the various couples asked quite a few questions which Kate answered frankly. I think this is going to be a hoot!

We miss next week's class, as we'll be in Jhb visiting friends and family (hooray). I might need to ask some questions because it's all about the labour bit (do I really want to know all that stuff?) BTW, I booked us in on a hospital tour in April: "you don't want to come in too early deary, we don't want to frighten you!"
