This is something my small girl is wrestling with. Why do I look different? Why do I never get 20/20 for the test like T? Or a certificate like C? Why don't we have a xxx like my friend? I want a whateveritis like Y!
Oh, and "it's not fair". (Add in the whine, and you have it!)
For the record, she did get 20/20 for one of her spelling tests this term.
Here's an extract from a chat with Jessica's teacher after other kids really badgered her about something that was physically different. We're talking about how to handle excess questioning:
A good discussion topic is about how God made us all unique. Different hair, nails, toes (that's a fun one to look at) and even ears and noses. And that there is no one person that is perfect. A good example is people from different countries view what "pretty" is different to different people. And how a nice person on the inside is better than yukky on the inside. In this context, having a innie or an outie is not a trainsmash, or even a chest that is a bit different. It's all part of who you are and its beautiful because you are made in His image.
Lovely idea....
And for a further discussion.... how finding is a job one day is finding the thing that makes you come alive, and doing it. Whether it's being kind, helping with small kids, making cookies, spelling, maths, reading or sport, we all have strengths. And one is not better than the other one! :)
Yip, if we can teach our kids that being themselves is awesome, and a gift to those around them. imagine what and who they might grow up to be by being themselves and doing what they love!
Big things for a small girl to grapple with. (And her mommy).
