And we spent the weekend near Sutherland. Think Karoo. Think escarpment. Think wide open spaces. Think BIG skies. Think star-studded nights. Hear silence...
Well, perhaps not the silence! Two small children can fill an entire Karoo landscape with motion and noise. A fantastic long weekend on Blesfontein farm, 26km outside Sutherland in the Northern Cape. Farm owners Nicol and Marina van der Merwe made us specially welcome, and we explored their top farm (one of three) to our heart's content.
Jessica headed for the horses, and was delighted to find Rosie and Charm, two new foals.
Luke terrorised the chickens as he waited anxiously for eggies to be laid... stage fright for the poor hens! Add in a farm reservoir to swim in, lamb to feed, alpaca to look at, fat pig to scratch and surreptitiously pass scraps to, rides with Nicol on his farm scrambler and in the tough old Land Cruiser, a zebra, a morning herd of springbok, lots of wild bunnies, other kids, koi to feed... well, what more could you add?
Just stars in abundance! Star talks, shooting stars (called shooting stars 'cos they shoot), telespokes, observatories and of course, SALT, the Southern African Large Telescope which sees into deep southern space. Mmm. And a moonlit walk in the early autumn chill of a quiet evening after small people fell into bed.
Thanks babe - what a truly full and special and revitalising weekend with our little family. xx
